This year, Ghost Fishing UK has applied to take part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign. We’re hoping to raise vital funds for our project: Making the Circle Round.

We are aiming to raise a total of £2,500 in pledges to take part in the Christmas Challenge. Would you consider making a pledge of £100 to help us reach our target?

Our charity consists of volunteer scuba divers, with extensive training in advanced diving practices specifically in relation to helping the marine environment by removing harmful lost fishing gear called ‘Ghost Gear.

Each year it is estimated that 640,000 tonnes of lost fishing gear makes its way into our oceans and continues fishing indiscriminately and indefinitely.

It can cost £1000 to locate, recover and recycle just one diving day’s haul of ghost gear, which is normally in the region of 100-200kg per day.

‘Making the Circle Round’ campaign is not only about removing lost fishing nets from the ocean, but creating a recycling pathway here in the UK to keep lost fishing gear, which are mainly plastics, out of our oceans and landfill sites.

As part of our application, we need our key supporters to make promises of funding, called ‘Pledges’, which will be used as match funds to double online donations made to our charity during the campaign. Your commitment of funding might also help us to secure additional match funds via a Champion (sourced by the Big Give).

Ghost Fishing UK requires match funding Pledges for its Ghost Fishing UK – Making the circle round campaign before the pledge deadline on 28/08/2020, 17:00!

All pledgers will be applauded on our social media platforms (unless you prefer anonymity) and will receive our charity newsletter so you can keep tabs on how the money is being used. If you can spare the minimum amount of £100, please head to this easy Pledge Form to support Ghost Fishing UK.

This is how it works: The Big Give Christmas Challenge

The Big Give runs the UK’s biggest match funding campaign, The Christmas Challenge.

The Christmas Challenge is a match funding campaign where donations to participating charities are doubled. The match funds come from two sources – charities secure some of these (Pledges) over the summer.

These funds are then boosted by funds from a Big Give Champion who contributes to the match fund. This collective pot is used to double donations from online supporters when the campaign is live.

The Christmas Challenge 2020 will take place from 12pm 1st December 2020 – 12pm 8th December 2020
when donations to participating charities are doubled.

By becoming a Pledger you are committing to provide match funds. These funds will be used to double donations made to the charity during the campaign. As a Pledger, you cannot donate to the same charity during the live campaign and any donation will be counted as fulfilment of your pledge.
