This year, Ghost Fishing UK has applied to take part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign. We’re hoping to raise vital funds for our project: Making the Circle Round.

We are aiming to raise a total of £10,000 made up of pledges and donations to take part in the Christmas Challenge.

We are delighted to announce that we have secured a champion and we now need to raise £5000 in one week to make up the matching pot!

Our charity consists of volunteer scuba divers, with extensive training in advanced diving practices specifically in relation to helping the marine environment by removing harmful lost fishing gear called ‘Ghost Gear.

Each year it is estimated that 640,000 tonnes of lost fishing gear makes its way into our oceans and continues fishing indiscriminately and indefinitely.

It can cost £1000 to locate, recover and recycle just one diving day’s haul of ghost gear, which is normally in the region of 100-200kg per day.

‘Making the Circle Round’ campaign is not only about removing lost fishing nets from the ocean, but creating a recycling pathway here in the UK to keep lost fishing gear, which are mainly plastics, out of our oceans and landfill sites.

This is how it works: The Big Give Christmas Challenge

The Big Give runs the UK’s biggest match funding campaign, The Christmas Challenge.

The Christmas Challenge is a match funding campaign where donations to participating charities are doubled. The match funds come from two sources – charities secure some of these (Pledges) over the summer.

These funds are then boosted by funds from a Big Give Champion who contributes to the match fund. This collective pot is used to double donations from online supporters when the campaign is live.

The Christmas Challenge 2020 will take place from 12pm 1st December 2020 – 12pm 8th December 2020 when our donations are doubled.
